Kohei Kawata’s Contract Expires

Gamba have announced on their official website that Kohei Kawata (Goalkeeper, 25) will not be having his contract renewed for the 2013 season.

Kawata spent the whole of last season at newly-relegated J2 team Avispa Fukuoka where he made just 10 appearances whilst warming the bench for the other 32 games, with Ryuichi Kamiyama being the preferred choice over the young loanee. His small number of appearances was the first of Kawata’s professional career even though he spent two seasons with Gamba before being loaned. He, just like the other goalkeepers at Gamba, could not oust Yosuke Fujigaya as number one.

The Oita-born goalkeeper was part of the Sagan Tosu team from 2007 until 2010 as a specially designated player which allowed him to play for Fukuoka University whilst being part of the playing staff at the then-J2 team. He made no appearances for the Kyushu outfit during his time and went on to join Gamba in 2010 but to the same outcome.

He will now have to search for a new team for the upcoming 2013 season, whether that be in J2 or the JLF, only time will tell. I wish Kohei the best in his footballing career and hope that he can achieve his goals (not own-goals) as a goalkeeper. Thank you for your efforts whilst at Gamba.
